Brick Laying

09/11/05

I drank a little Kenyan whiskey last night and had wicked Larium dreams.

I'm getting really good at the long drop. I wonder if Ron would mind if I dug one in the back yard in LA?

The power is out again, its another lantern night. I like the smell of kerosene.

After breakfast I went to the church and met Robert. We proceeded down to a site where some of the village orphans were working on a brick-laying project. Its great that they are doing something, but the amount of time that they put into the project compared to the profits is ridiculous. The process takes months to complete, and has at least four days of intensive labor, and yields like 1000/=. It just doesn't seem cost effective. That said, I understand the project, you don't need much to start it: dirt, water, fire. But still I'm glad that we are going to fund some more efficient projects, and ones that teach more practical life skills than brick making.

We have a lot to do for the pilot program this week, organizational shit that I'm not actually looking forward to (like registering the group and opening a bank account.) I want to be filming more PLWHAs and OVC. I'm really starting to get the hang of the DVX and conducting/filming these interviews and activities. Don't ever let anyone say that coming to rural Africa by yourself with a video camera and good intentions is an easy way to make a film.
